Director of Engineering

Based in San Mateo, CA, we are a top startup in the video streaming domain. Our customers include top broadcasters, content aggregators, and sports leagues. We are very well-funded, and have an extremely high caliber engineering team.

We are looking for an experienced engineering director to be both an organizational leader and technical leader.

 

As an organizational leader, the engineering director would have the following responsibilities:

(a) Be hands on in directly leading a team of engineers, mentoring and motivating them to work to their full potential and ensuring they grow to the level of performance and expertise set by the company.
(b) Build the team by hiring new members to the team that meet the high bar of expertise, performance, and teamwork, and ensuring the team works well together especially at challenging times such as deadlines.
(c) Be a go to person. All functions of the Company from sales, product management, customer support, service operations, and the software engineers depend on the leadership of the engineering directors.
(d) Work across teams in a boundaryless manner to ensure that company level goals are met.
(e) Be a conduit of knowledge and information exchange between the team of engineers and other functions inside the company and ensure clear and efficient communication between engineers.
(f) Do thorough and effective performance reviews annually with each engineer on the team and continuously monitor and improve performance of engineers throughout the year.


As a technology leader, the engineering director would have the following responsibilities:


(a) Work to ensure the company stays ahead of the competition and constantly look to find technological innovations that will further differentiate our products in large scale real-time data processing, data mining, online video optimization algorithms, multi-platform support, and data visualization.
(b) Work with the development team and with product management to ensure correct and efficient development and delivery of new features and be accountable for deadlines
(c) Develop and reinforce a culture of iterative software development with good testability and maintanability for long-term usage with appropriate usage of tools like design reviews, coding style, code reviews, etc.
(d) Make difficult prioritization decisions for the team trading off new features, bugs, and software quality considering revenue and overall impact to the company in the near term and long term
(e) Manage the team and tasks with agility, being able to pivot when necessary to take on new business opportunities, address critical product holes, or double down to accelerate an important project.
(f) Represent the compan in front of customers and be able to communicate our value and technology to customers
(g) Lead new product deployments with early beta customers working with the customers to flush out integration points, walk through initial launches, and quickly learn from the experience by feeding back into the product.
